Bookstore - Jon Brion
I watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind last night (again).
I don't consider the theme of memory extremely fresh or new. I think it's rather the production and execution that set the movie apart. I think how the movie orders the plot is genius, but that has been probably discussed a lot. Another thing I really like is how the movie visualizes the concept of intimacy, how it makes it seem beautiful to share vulnerabilities. People say that only those who were truly in love can appreciate this movie. I partly agree (because the first time I watched this I didn't understand why people were so crazy about it), but I don't think love is the right word.
And the characters. They're exaggerated and full of cliches, but again I think it’s the details that count. The scene where Joel was bullied was heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time. The scene alone adds another layer of color to Joel’s character as well as to the relationship between him and Clementine.
I always cry in this particular scene in snowy Montauk. The soundtrack is beautiful. I even love that it’s titled Bookstore.
